I live in Albany, NY and my children attend a "city" school system. Both of my children are healthy and happy, and are growing up in a diverse and colorful setting.
I am from a small town where there were no "people of color". When I say none, I mean maybe 1...in the whole town...not exactly a place to learn about how to relate to diverse cultures.
My point in all of this is that the local media in Albany broadcasts every single incident at the high school and middle school like it is part of a larger system of chaos and destruction.
Every school in America, whether rich or poor, small or large, has problem students and problem teachers. My kid's school, School 19, is a well run, positive place. When I tell someone that my kids are in the Albany school system, they ask me when we are moving. Almost every day there is a fight or some sort of incident at the high school...but there are 2000 kids in that school. I am almost sure that if you investigated a local system that is in the 'burbs that you would find the same problems. Only the drugs would be more expensive and the kids may have nicer cars or better clothes.
My rant here is to say that we will move at some point, once my wife gets her teaching job. But we will move for more land and a bigger house..not to get away from the school system.
My kids are going to live in a world where "white" people are becoming the minority and I hope they will be better prepared than I was to deal with this.

I watch American Idol. I can't help it. I have the weird fantasy that someone with real talent will win the stupid competition at some point.
The guy this year with the grey hair..I forget his name...is great. He sounds like Joe Cocker and looks like he is 40, when he is really 28. My kind of guy. He will lose. He looks nothing like an "AMERICAN IDOL". He looks like the guy who fixes your desktop.
I can listen to any kind of music, from country to heavy metal, but I am partial to regular everyday melodic rock. Also, in a weird way, I am happy Barry Manlow has the number one album in the country after a 29 year drought. At least the number one is not some horrible R&B act with no talent except picking the latest "hot" producer.
I like people who can play their instruments and can do this in a live setting, without a backup track or "assistance".
Monday and Friday is Jungle Music day at work. The radio station selection is rotated throughout the office, I get 2 days a week. The other 3 days SUCK.
If I hear any more Nelly I will start to load my weapon.
The weekend is almost here, and we are going to get a foot of snow Saturday night. Yipee.

I have sleep apnea. I have a machine that I must wear whilst I sleep that lets me breath properly. I look like I am going out of the Shuttle for a spacewalk every time I go to sleep.
We have 3 dogs and 2 cats. Yes, I know what you are thinking.....zoo. Well, each child needed a dog, and my wife has a Pomeranian that is 11 years old and still holding on. She is my wife's first "baby".
My son has a 1 year old Golden Retriever named Oscar. My daughter has a 6 month old minature daschund named Ginger. We also have 2 cats, which are named--"get the HELL out of my way" and "what is that smell?".
I am having a wonderful cup of coffee right now at work.....Dunkin Donuts Hazelnut Passion Explosion Ultra Mega Super Special Edition.
Later I plan on drinking a beer and watching Homicide -Life on the Streets reruns on the Sleuth channel.
Thanks for stopping in.
May the road of life be free of twist and turns and always plowed to the right.

O.K. Here goes.
This is my first attempt at a "blog". One of my friends, Eric, has one that he has maintained for years, and I always found it interesting. A good way to keep in touch with those who live far away, and also a good way for me to vent, scream, cry, fart and otherwise expend my energies not throttling those sitting near me.
The good news: Heading to NYC on April 1st for the Roger Clyne and the Peacemaker show. On a boat. A big boat. Around New York harbor, statue of liberty, etc. Will be good. Night in the city with the wife, listening to great tunes, floating in the pristine Hudson. Maybe I will fish for dinner. Mercury GOOD!!!!
Work good. Company policy does not allow me to speak of my masters on any "web-based platform" without the specific written authority of the Commisoner of Major League Baseball.
Thanks for coming in. I will rant later. Now I must rest.
